Abstract

The oil and gas industry has been responsible for the bulk of investments in Brazilian economy for years, which is not surprising, as it is a capital-intensive industry. In addition, the discovery of the pre-salt province in Brazil, in the 2000s, with high-quality oil and extremely high-productivity fields, assigns the country a privileged position in offshore exploration. In this chapter, the features, challenges, barriers and opportunities for actions related to oil and gas are addressed, from the understanding that exploration should: comply with the best strategy; maximize the generation of wealth for the country – what is not possible strictly through the production of oil only –; and enhance its influence over the economy.
