The chemical industry has a significant participation in Brazilian economy. However, local systemic challenges have been restricting investments in production capacity in Brazil. As a result, the trade deficits in the industry have been expressive and the opportunities of local aggregation of value have been lost. However, there are opportunities that the country may use to reverse this situation. In addition to already mapped improvements in aspects that affect all economic activities, there are specific measures that could unlock the development of the local chemical industry. Among them are the focus on industry segments with greater potential for international competitiveness, specific improvements in the various modes of transport in the sector, the establishment of Export Processing Zones (ZPEs) and the use of pre-salt oil in new petrochemical enterprises in the country, which could raise annual investments up to U$ 4 billion. In a more expressive perspective for the sector, the exploitation of opportunities in the field of biotechnology, taking advantage of Brazil’s high competitiveness in agribusiness, may assign the country a prominent role in the global industry.-
