Abstract

Shipyards are industrial facilities for the construction, maintenance and repair of vessels. The importance of the shipbuilding industry to the economy has led many countries to maintain shipyards and public policies to encourage this activity. Brazil has once held the rank of second largest shipbuilder in the world. Very briefly, the history of the Brazilian shipbuilding industry and the current situation of large shipyards will be reported. The focus, however, will be on describing the differences and similarities between two types of shipyards: those dedicated to repair and maintenance and those dedicated to building new vessels. For this, the various activities involved and their characteristics will be detailed. The objective of showing the potential for naval maintenance and repair activity in Brazil prompted the presentation of considerations about the large national merchant navy fleet and cabotage traffic along the coast of the North and Northeast of Brazil.
