Abstract: The object of this paper is a review of the reasons for the privatization of the telecommunications industry in New Zealand and the model of the same. The paper also examines the regulatory and economic framework within which the same has operated and whether the government achieved its objectives when it set out to privatize the industry in 1986. The telecommunications market in New Zealand now permits competition thus allowing for new entrants in the market. Following on the liberalization of the telecommunications market a number of benefits have accrued to the consumer. The proceeds of sale from divestment also helped to reduce the public debt. It has also resulted in the New Zealand economy having a new and improved telecommunications sector. A decrease job market occured but the whole process has a positive balance. This paper also presents comparisons between the New Zealand telecom privatization model and the present Brazilian privatization.
