The Covid-19 pandemic triggered global demand for medical equipment suited to dealing with the disease. Overloaded by this demand, the industrial sector began a conversion of its production capacity at the same time that it confined large portions of its workforce. In this context, the global value chains were heavily strained, bringing public and private institutions from all over the world into a multidimensional effort to mitigate the economic impacts of the pandemic. In this article, we attempt to describe and contextualize that effort, discussing how it has favored a resumption of the political importance of the industrial sector. Subsequently, we examine the Brazilian economic policy in the period and conclude that it should be adapted to the new international situation, in which global value chains will probably be less critical and the industrial reshoring of strategic sectors seems likely.-
